"we are career trainees"

The title of this post comes from a comment because I think it should be our new battle cry.

I also think that if things are going to continue as they are, in the meantime, NIH-funded postdoc fellowships should be adjusted upwards.

For once, the NPA is trying to put the collective postdoc mouth where the money needs to be. Click on the link above and follow the instructions to send a message arguing that this is important! It's really easy and only takes a few minutes, but it might be the most useful thing we can do this week.

I bristle every time I hear someone (invariable either a PI or else a newbie grad student) refer to postdoctoring as being "training" and us as "trainees." The newbie simply is too naive and inexperienced to know otherwise and believes the academic propaganda. Yet if you explain to them they will probably just brush you off and say it will be different for them. Ah, the innocence of grad school! It will take them say 5-9 years to learn the hard way.

The PIs know what the reality is but continue to propagate the myth anyway. (in addition some people luck out and make the transition from postdoc to PI due to their networking and luck without knowing that this was due to those things and they actually also believe it was due to being so qualified cos of their 'training').

So, given that PIs perpetuate the myth of "training" - as if there really is a higher purpose for the training - and a few of them actually believe it, and it takes so many years for naive newbies to see through it for themselves by which time they've already served their purpose to the PIs and are ready to be discarded...no wonder the system remains unchanging.

Nice one. I sent loads and loads of emails yesterday and even spent time on the phone to offices in DC trying to find out who to email if it was "constituents only"...

Jaime Laviena from Hospital.com offers her free website because they promise their writers payment, and then never pay. I spent many hours producing work for her and she continued to promise to pay and NEVER did. A very untrustworthy and lying person this Jaime Laviena is.
